Gemshorn

A medieval "recorder like" flute sometimes made from the horn of an African gemsbok. Unlike the recorder the range of notes are limited to just one octave or eight notes. Notice also that the end of the instrument is closed, unlike most any other woodwind. When I purchased this instrument over 20 years ago, I had no idea what a gemshorn was. I responded to a small ad placed in Early Music magazine. Six months later, imagine my surprise when out of the packing material this instrument appeared! It has always been one of my favorites. Audiences are also surprised and enchanted.
